If something isn't showing up in the GNOME menu, then its not following Freedesktop.org specs most likely OR it has a hidden flag set.  You can do a couple things, open either Thunar or Nautilus file manager and navigate to /usr/share/applications, then drag the launcher you are looking for to your desktop or panel.  If you want to get fancy you can netpkg alacarte and then simply right-click on the word "Applications" and choose edit menus.  You should be able to find anything hidden or add anything new almost anywhere you want from there.

Good luck

Zeq

I have to apologize.  I thought I installed the /extra files.  I didn't.  The applications show up in the menus.

Anyway, I do find gnome sluggish compared to Xfce, but at least it hasn't crashed yet.  I do get a lot of 'application not responding' and have to do a lot of 'force quit' to close the application.  This is much better than getting knocked out of my user session.

Any thought on why I get so many 'application not responding' messages?

BTW, it may be an idea to start a ZenGnome forum.

It sounds to me like your computer just isn't fast enough.  GNOME is beefy, thats why Zenwalk uses XFCE by default (its cholesteral free!).

ZenGNOME Forum?  Perhaps...

Zeq,

Maybe it needs to be 'beefed up' a little.

I am running a 1 GHz Athlon with 384 Mb of RAM, ATI Radeon 9600 Pro video card, ASUS on-board sound and a creative hardware modem.  Worked great with Slackware 8.0 through 10.2.  Lots of problems since switching to Zenwalk 2.8 through 4.4.1.

Maybe my problem is the 2.6 kernel.  Oh well.....

1 month later and following the steps listed here prove impossible.

Searching the repo only shows up gnome-2.18.0 and trying to install this as shown results in an inoperable GNOME setup (stops loading after the 'The Panel' icon on the startup).

Do we have a working GNOME setup for 4.4.1, or is it in devel? Or, is my system just..broken? ;D

About 2 weeks ago I updated ZenGNOME and while most of ZenGNOME was built on snapshot, in order for me to get a complete GNOME, I had to use the new GTK+2, and libgnome libraries provied only in the snapshot repo.  Consequently, you will need to upgrade your system to snapshot in order to use ZenGNOME now.

Step 1:
http://wiki.zenwalk.org/index.php/Snaps ... _Toolchain <= Good Walkthrough
Step 2:
netpkg mirror [ use my ZenGNOME repo ]
Step 3:
netpkg gnome-$VERSION [ $VERSION = GNOME VERSION (2.18.0) ]

Have fun,
Zeq

Hi Zeq

Added Gnome into 4.6 beta 2, got this error;

There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.

Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly.

The last error message was:

Process /usr/libexec/gnome-settings-daemon exited with status 127

GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.

plz advise..

Hey ggordon, although I can't speak fully for Zeq, I can tell you that he does know about the issue with 4.6b2+ZenGNOME and he is rebuilding now.

In the mean time , I recommend sticking with the default xfce packages.

In the future you should not have this issue - when 4.6 moves from snapshot to current, Zenwalk Gnome Edition will be finally built against current (instead of snapshot) and you can use this instead (zenwalk gnome edition = zenwalk+zengnome+some other stuff gnome users will typically like installed.. all "out of the box")

OK...works for me....and other than that one issue, everything else seems ok. I actually prefer the default manager, but had gotten use to Gnome while trying out Ubuntu and thought it would be nice to have it for Zenwalk also....my MAIN distro....had it installed and configured,Samba, etc. PDQ and it definitely works better than beta 1...so  I'll wait for 'final'..

Hi Zeq,
Thanks. One thing I'd like to know: which repo is gnome in?

Guad, 2.16.0 is outdated. We are now using 2.18.0.

In order to run our Gnome, you must run a snapshot system (see the wiki for how to update).

Why?  Because soon, 4.6 will be released and it is not worth building 2.18.0 for current when it will be no longer supported within weeks ...

After you have updated to snapshot, follow the instructions in this thread (http://support.zenwalk.org/index.php/topic,3127.30.html)

Noticed over on the OSNews.com website that Gnome 2.19.2 has been released....so now it is the latest and greatest.....also saw Linus released kernel 2.22.0rc1 for Linux, so maybe all the new stuff will be integrated into final Zen when it rolls out...

Looks like I was wrong... ZenGNOME is supposed to work fine with 4.6b2 ?
