Take care to upgrade the kernel to the latest 2.6.21.3 ;)

If somebody need the "Snapshot for Toolchain" wiki page, here is the cached version.

Yes the Silicon Hill server had 4.6beta1 but it was called Zenwalk-4.6.iso.
It is fine that you can tell it is the wrong one after you have downloaded it but that means I have lost nearly 10% of my download limit on day one. Not happy.  Thanks for hosting Silicon Hill but you still should not mess us up like this.

Zenwalk 4.6 works great but still have bugs.
- he don`t want to switch to other language
- hibernate and Standby down my system. (crash crash crash), a very buggy applications.
- i don`t have a good panel of mouse settings. (I want to set my mouse, for 2 click not for one, this settings missing).
- Gdm run slow. I wait 5 seconds for logon.
- if I drop a movie in my mplayer, gnome-mplayer it crash.
- Firefox (CTRL+A don`t insert a text in my web bar).

I think that Zenwalk in general is a kickass distro and I appreciate the time and effort the Zenwalk team puts into this distro....there are a few things that good be better, but overall I am very satisfied with 4.6. Keep up the good work.

I realize that this is exposing my ignorance, but it is obviously a strong selling point for Zenwalk 4.6

"The most important change in 4.6 at system level is the new tool chain, with GCC 4.1, which has been fully implemented. All libraries and applications have been compiled with this tool chain - including all of the packages available in the "extra" repository (i.e. applications not on the CD-ROM ISO)."

I'm sorry but I have absolutely no idea what this means in practice and what the advantages are of having this. If I'm about to "sell" the new version to colleagues, it would be great to have a "simple" explanation of what this paragraph means and why it is such a great new feature for the latest version. I don't like just going "Wow!" and passing on none the wiser, I would prefer to understand.

Regards

Michael

I think it means that all of the Zenwalk's packages have been built with GCC 4.1 and therefore benefit from new optimizations. Moreover, having the new toolchain, Zenwalk is compatible with slackware's packages.

Yes ... and for users of other systems (Debian based, or Gentoo) GCC 4.x has been the norm for quite a while.

Best regards,
Claus

I hope e17 will be packaged for 4.6 at last

I and another guy (E17 veteran) are working to get it ready as fast as possible. However, it's tough (source code changes everyday) and we have to work out bugs as we go. But we are really close now. Mostly getting the menu's and the themes fixed up left to do.

:)

Installed 4.6 yesterday - more straight than ever!

Even the need to setup the keyboard table two times is gone -
a small change, but a big plus for logic & 'first time experience'.
And no 'why do i have to...' questions any more!

And with the power of modern cpu's, we could improve the installer
even more when dialog boxes are disabled - you can't read them anyway!

With 300+ packages installed in <10 minutes (6 minutes in my case ;),
the average display time is <2 seconds - far to fast to get any meaning from it!
Just keep a log and the ability to control verbosity should be enough!

Or still better, show a summary of detected/given parameters and a progress bar -
nothing else matters at this stage!

I had to manually start the networkconfig, though - but then, eth0 again ;)

Quote:
All libraries and applications have been compiled with this tool chain

16 packages versioned z3x
9 packages versioned 42.x
5 packages versioned 44.x
Are there any reason other than 'slipped'?

Another (very minor!) issue are the creation time of files installed from cd.
Looks like the time zone is not immediately applied, thus creating files with gmt+0
instead of the given time zone.

Quote:
Kernel 2.6.21.3 has been, again, optimized for performance.

Why are MSI/MSI-X (message signaled interrupts) disabled?

I had some issue with 'spurious 8259A interrupt: IRQ7' and a constantly
resetting usb port (logitech usb optical mouse) with the standard kernel.

They are gone with my optimzed kernel build - to much changes to get a reason, though.

Flawless in all other respects - many thanks to the developers!

Even on a P2 where I installed ZW4.4.1 on the messages were unreadable, except for the big ones (still need to read fast though). Other install screen options:
During install Zenwalk could do it a little (just a little) like Windows does: showing improvements on the new release, all major changes in screens that change every 20 seconds.
Another option is (see above) the summary and progress bar, but also with the name of the package that is currently being installed, just in case it hangs on a package and you don't know which one it was.

Now: I would like to install 4.6 too, but I prefer a clean install. So I would like to know if I can take my config files from my home-dir and put them in the new install in my home-dir. In the new install I would use the same username (only user on system) and location for this home-dir. Any suggestions are welcom: My current 4.4.1 system is setup nice and I hope to keep as many configuration as it is. I have a spare identical harddrive that I would like to put in my laptop to install 4.6 on. so no dualboot or anything like this.

Ron
