Hi,

The information and images that were found at the Zenwalk LiveCD website has been merged into the main Zenwalk website. This will make it easier to manage and reduce the amount of websites in your web browser's "favorites" (now you only need Zenwalk)

:)

There are major disadvantages to having a combined live/install CD. For instance, the standard Ubuntu Live/install CD requires a good deal more memory to run than does the Ubuntu 'alternative' CD, not to mention that the Live/install CD is quite inflexible compared to the 'alternative' - there are a number of situations where it cannot be used because it will not allow sufficient customization.

Another example of why it is not a wonderful approach is upgrades. If you install from a Mepis CD, you can only upgrade via the web, not via the CD for a new version. Which is a pain if you have a slow internet connection or if the machine you want to upgrade is not connected to the internet at all...

Personally, I would much rather see the present situation continued - a live CD which allows people to try Zenwalk (and can be used as a rescue CD if necessary) and an install CD to allow them to install it once they've found out how good it is  ;D

Yes your point is perfectly acceptable. But my point was for having 2 Zenwalk Cd's downloaded (live and std)... But thats not a pain in the ass after all...

And more, i dont know if this is possible. Ubuntu does the Live with Std in a different way right.. I mean you first have to boot into perfect desktop using live cd and then you gotta install. But how about making it in the other way in Zenwalk. Again i am not sure if what i say is possible...

While the Cd is booted, it will ask for the options to enter right... So there, can the optons be provided like Zen live and below Zen std installation. So any body want to try Live cd, will choose live option and boot (which works exactly as Zen live cd) or if they want installations, then let them choose installation option, which again works as installation std cd... Is this way a possible??? :D

That's exactly the idea we have for the next release  ;)

At boot there will be an option to Start Zenwalk Live as usual and other option to Install it on HD.  The installer will be the same installer from regular Zenwalk but adapted to install from a squashfs instead of from packages.

These options should suit all Zenwalk users.

it would be great for demos. i've run slax on friend's computers a few times and they usually ask "how to install?".  if when the next release goes as planned, i wouldnt have to whip out another cd  8) cool

so i bet the next one is significantly bigger than the 450MB now.

We'll be using Squashfs patched for LZMA compression support so the whole Zenwalk filesystem + Gparted + firefox and thunderbird locales ~= 400 Mb

;D

Finally your going to add squashfs+lzma patch.  ;D

I hope you can add my unuselivemod script in zenwalk live 4.6.1. That and it works if you running kde now too.  ;D  So it maybe in slax 6 soon too.

This is as of aufs-20070528.

Allow me another point of view.

Zenlive is not only for allowing people to try out Zenwalk and find out how good it is. Am using ZenLive for itself. I have remastered it and on whatever computer I am working on I feel immediately at home with ZenLive. All I need is on the LiveCD.

Regards

:) Fair enough. I tend not to think of live CDs as long term use items because of speed issues - while the Zenlive CD is a good deal better than many other live CDs (I tried something called MyhaOS the other day - not only did it take almost 4 minutes to boot, it was painfully slow loading applications even when booted) I still find it a bit slow for anything other than occasional use. If you're not affected by the speed issues, its not a problem.

If speed is your concern, you might consider a "poor man's install" on usb-stick or HD. And of course there is sometimes this boot option : 'copy2ram'.

the slax website recommends a "real OS" for install.  i dont have enough memory for a "copy2ram' but i bet (here i go again, lol) its very fast.

shame on me, i still use slax for anything live-cd  :-[

downloading now, though.  giving it a try this pm :)

Think: Zen
