Hello there, new zenwalk-user-wannabe here!

I have little experience with Linux: little bit of Ubuntu, Debian, Vectorlinux, Arch. All of them I was able to install and configure more or less.

I downloaded ZW 2.4 full, the MD5 checksum was correct, burnt it twice (once with Nero Express, once with ImgBurn, both under windows), not even on max speed settings.

Install on old laptop (P2 233Mhz, 96MB ram) always returns several fatal package errors (f.e. ntp, openssl, openssh, x11...) and LILO fails the automatic installation. On this laptop I had installed Vectorlinux without a hitch.

Then onto a newer system (Pentium M 1.5 with 512MB Ram): Both cd's give me another fatal package error (can't remember which one, but it was of no significance to me), and still LILO fails the automatic install...

I would like to try ZenWalk very much, but I can't find a solution to these problems. Am I doing something wrong here? Maybe I should try to redownload the iso, but the MD5 checks out and both cd's return the same errors on both systems... Anyone?

THX!

Zl.

If the installation fails on both boxes, i would say you got yourself a bad burn... It seems very unplausible both optical devices aren't working as they should.

THX for your fast reply!

Was hoping to get a 'this is a known error-reply', because this could mean my DVDRW is going down. I purposely used 2 different programs and 2 medium writing speeds, and both times I got a 'burnt succesful'-message from the prog.

I'll try another burner tonight and report back in.

THX again!

Zl.

Remember that md5sum isn't a completely failsafe check. If it fails again, try to download the files again. I remember having some of these package failures when I tried early versions of Zenwalk, and I didn't get a "known error" from other users either - the files available have been checked by so many people that it can be safely assumed they are OK. It's either bad burned or something in the download was bad (and you were so un-lucky that the md5sum still matches).

Best regards,
Claus

P.S. If all else fails - consider buying a CD :) http://on-disk.com/product_info.php/products_id/100

THX!

I burnt another copy and this one seems to work: no more fatal package errors for me! The LILO-problem still remains however, and my guess is that it has something to do with my SATA-disk (sda), becasue cfdisk also tries to partition my hda (cdrom).

Anyways, one manual configuration of LILO and some 'buggering' inside xorg.conf (first time vi-user, so this was not so trivial for me...) to get my sync-rates correct later, I'm posting this message from my ZenWalk 2.4 (upgraded to current)-machine.

And, yes: once I have found my distribution, I will buy the cd (and probably every new one too). And with a name like ZenWalk, /me probably won't be able to resist this baby ;)

Zl.
PS: on the downside, this probably means my DVDRW has had it and will have to be replaced :(

Claus,

Are you really so unlucky that your MD5s coincide but the data don't? Let me know your travel plans; I'll be taking a different route.

Maybe md5sum /dev/cdrom would reveal the the burn didn't match the download.

Cheers,  markc
