lso wondering if you could be convinced in putting it somewhere more official - as for example in the wiki? (in the wiki it may or may not be a link to a PDF file ... you could choose to put the graphics directly in the wiki).

actually, free is kindly working on the wiki version of the companion. you can find the draft link here: http://wiki.zenwalk.org/index.php/Zenwa ... nion_Draft

i am currently working on a version that is easier to read and easier to use. i need to have a few more days on this, but it is coming along. :)

if you have any suggestions, please let me know.

(Latex, if I am not mistaken).

yeah... i love latex  ;D

i need someone to take screen shots of gnome programs and kde programs as for the moment, i cannot afford to install/uninstall kde/gnome for every kde/gnome programs for their screenshots.

best wishes

i did a little more to improve the companion (hopefully).

- i put more screenshots
- table of contents
- reorganised the entries
- added comments on some packages, e.g. contacts.

i kept the older version of the companion just for comparison. let me know if the newer version is easier to use or not. i know there are still many spelling mistakes and all that, and i will try to fix them soonish.

the first post is now updated.

best wishes

the table of contents is really something the old version lacks. good point. this project gets better with every release. keep up the good work.  :)

link should point here:
http://wiki.zenwalk.org/index.php?title ... nion_Draft

Im moving it to Index:Zenwalk_Companion when I update it with tsuren's new changes.  Maybe a link from the main wiki page when its good and polished?

.:zenwalk companion updated:.
1. extra/xap is now up to date
2. added some applications from extra/kde
3. indexing
4. added entries on some test packages (yes... i am very much biased when it comes to selecting...): ardour, synfig, scim and texmac. i am thinking of expanding the section in the future.
5. the file is now getting to 8 mb. :(:(:(

the download link on the first post is now updated.

i think that's a good idea.

by the way, i changed the layout of the companion a bit, but the wiki can keep the current format. i think it is also a good idea to make a link within the category to get back to the top directory of the companion wiki. (as it is done in the game section.)

i will also send a list of what's been updated and all that to you if you don't mind. ;) perhaps i should do the update myself since i have all the text, but right now i cannot do both companion and the wiki. anyway, i really appreciate your help making the wiki entries. :) :)

cheers

Hi tsuren and free.

For all I can see, the wiki version looks really beautiful. How about changing from draft to "official" ... if tsuren is willing to continue his good work in this format?

Best regards,
Claus

MOVED to:

Index:Zenwalk_Companion

mediawiki redirects the old links to the draft page so no worries :)

i've just seen the updated version of the companion wiki. looks great :) :) :)

i will be travelling to vienna this week, so next week, i will update the companion.

best wishes

p.s. by the way, free... it may be better to set the top page as "Zenwalk Companion" rather than the current "index:Zenwalk companion" what do you think?

companion updated to 13/9/2007

i noticed some packages that are supposed to be on the repositories (said "done" on FIFO) are not there... once they are available, i will update the companion to date.

i also updated some wiki entries. on the testing section in the companion, i added audacity, since i think it's a pretty famous program but not on the official repo yet.

if someone has nice screenshots of openbox, please do send them to me. :)

best wishes

tsuren

sorry for the delay... i had some trouble with LyX (again!!!!!) i forgot that i needed some extra package to be able to export it as pdf (by dvipdf)

Mini Reviews of this Week:
- from the extra -
gcstar
indeed a star program!! the program can be used to manage your collections (cds, dvds, books, games, wines etc etc...) very easy to use and i especially liked the retrieve info from the net function.

asunder
an excellent replacement program for grip. this makes all the ripping process hmm... less archaic.

cairo-clock
a beautiful clock for a desktop. you need to enable Compositor for this to work. (use Compiz/Bery or use the native xfce4 compositor - the option is under "window manager treaks")

- from Contributor's packages -
Kiba-Dock (http://support.zenwalk.org/index.php?topic=11276.0)
for the screenshots, see zariweb's screenshot http://support.zenwalk.org/http://suppo ... 877#p63877
kiba-dock is the panel on the bottom. simply beautiful :)

In fact, i use cairo-clock and kiba-dock (plus adesklets) at the moment using the native xfce4 compositor, and they run beautifully. :)

[metisse (http://support.zenwalk.org/index.php?topic=10929.0)
personally, i prefer metisse to beryl/compiz at the moment. it is nice. and it probably improves productivity when you are used to the environment. as for me, i only love the "restack and roll" feature (page folding thing) and i don't really like the fvwm. there are couple other minor problems, but Metisse is certainly usable.

--- end of this mini review section. for the screenshots, see the zenwalk companion ---

TODO: update zenwalk companion on the wiki.

@Borromini thanks for making the companion sticky :)

zenwalk companion on wiki now has a new look. :) (ok, i admit, it's not 100% ready but i intend to finish it off this week.)

http://wiki.zenwalk.org/index.php?title ... _Companion

as always thanks for your contribution. and if you happen to upload screenshots there on the zenwalk companion wiki, could you please send the screenshots also to me. :)

best wishes
