I'd like to test KDE 4. Perhaps somebody has packages for it which allow side by side install with KDE 3?

EDIT: Topic changed to KDE 4

EDIT2: http://download.zenwalk.org/people/prfaasse/ZenWalk-5.0

A Qt4.3.1 'side-by-side- package is already in 'snapshot'

I was busy building a kde-4 (beta-1) set of packages, but got 'distracted' at some moment... My apologies... I'll see if i can get kde-4 beta-2 built.

Would be great. I always get this error:
Code:
root[kdelibs-3.93.0]# cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/opt/kde4 .
CMake Error: Qt qmake not found!
-- Configuring done

I have never used cmake before, so I don't know what to do.

The qmake you need (the 4.3.1 one..) is in /usr/lib/qt4/bin . This has nothing to do with cmake, but more with wto issues w.r.t. qt:

1) our Qt4 is a side-by-side one; this means that it does *not* blatantly 'take over' from Qt3: there is a qmake in /usr/lib/qt/bin/, but that is he Qt3 one....

2) normally, all Qt apps (kde included) should be able to find 'their' qmake from the environment var QTDIR. That does however not always work correctly (if an app does not look for QTDIR, my guess is that that causes your problem... ), or -as see pt 1- the QTDIR var is misdirecting ('our' QTDIR points again to Qt3...)

I do not know if you also run kde-3, but a word of caution is that you have to be a bit careful to not 'blast' your normal kde-3 when installing kde-4 applications. That is the point where i was pondering how to do 'the right thing' when i got distracted when i was building kde-4 .

KDE 4 beta 3 has been released. Perhaps anybody wants to package it?  ;D

I have already built a reasonable subset of kde4-beta2, but was so disappointed with the resulting functionality of this beta-2 that i've never released the results. My estimate was that there would be no way to get these beta-2 packages past our 'testing' phase of package-release  :o

Building the beta-3 should not be significantly different from beta-2. I'm a bit busy at the moment (i'm building two variations of kde-3.5.8 ) , so i'll have to let building (yet another  ::) ) kde-beta wait till quieter times.

I've read quite some complaints about the quality of KDE 4 beta's too. Seems it's barely usable at this moment.

I have the buildfiles for the 'basics' (up to kdebase4)...

Yes: that's how far i'd gotten before suspending kde4 activities due to a lack of functionality/stability of the results. I was building/testing beta-2. I think the buildfiles will require only very marginal changes to be applicable to beta-3.

Also: yes, i've got the sources of this beta-3 downloaded already  :P  When the kde-3.5.8 packages-set is done & the zw-5.0 variation/subset is also 'uploaded' and to the satisfaction of 'all', i'll give building kde4-beta-? another shot. Not because i have such high hopes of this specific beta, but mostly to prepare a complete set of buildfiles to be ready for a fully functional release of kde4.

btw, this is kinda OT: will ZW 5 incorporate KDE 4 or will it stick to the 3.5 series?

For the moment, kde4 is beta software. It would be fit for -perhaps- 'snapshot'. I have done partial test-builds of kde4-beta-x to see how far kde4 has progressed, but the results of that do not indicate that it's ready for 'full production' yet. Being a 'full-rewrite' and a 'beta-stage' software, i am not surprised about that. Kde4 will be 'ready when it's ready'  ;D

To answer more directly: No, 5.0 will be based upon kde-3.5.8 . (or perhaps 3.5.9  :o )

I do hope to have a bit more time in the near future to actually build & test these beta's. I am fully aware that the 3.5.x branch of kde is a breed on the brink of extinction, and that 'you guys' are eager to see 'what's a-brewing'  ;D
