All the "cli" features of Zenwalk 4.8 are present in this new version of the Core system :
- kernel 2.6.22.9
- main dev tools and libraries
- netpkg with which we stay fully compatible
- a minimal set of "vital" tools.

I've also decided not to include kernel sources anymore : in fact they are "netpkgeable" easily and I've never used them in any install of previous Zenwalk Core ... This is how the iso can only weigh 174 MB :)

Just a ten minutes install and you're ready to start building your own customized system ...

Enjoy the benefits of a minimal yet full featured system !

All the honor goes to JP and the dev team. Once their great job is done, I just "repackage" things ....

Thanks.

Seems like Core is the place to go if you want to run a non-XFCE Zenwalk machine.

Are there any wiki articles on how to set up a KDE Zenwalk-Core machine (GRUB, KDM, KDE, etc etc) minus all the XFCE stuff?

Or is it just as easy to install KDE on top of standard Zenwalk and then just remove or not use the stuff I don't want?

Thanks,

Chris

I seem to remember that prfaasse has a script to make this easy.  Ah!  Here it is: http://zenwalk.linuxish.net/people/prfa ... all-kde.sh

I have never used it, so try it at your own risk.  After you install your zencore, make sure you are a root user. In the console, make sure you are in the same directory where the script is located and type:
Code:
mcedit install-all-kde.sh

add this line at the top of the script
Code:
#!/bin/bash

Look over the the bottom part of that script and see if there are components you don't want.  Place # in front of the ones you don't want.  When you are done, Press F10 and answer yes
Code:
chmod 755 install-all-kde.sh
./install-all-kde.sh

I am currently using Xubuntu but hope to start Zenwalking - maybe when school gets out this summer?  Anyway, I am a total perfectionist and want to use Zenwalk Core, in the newest possible release.  Could anyone tell me the planned release schedule for Core?  Thanks in advance.

I think that would be: "just a bit after a new version of Zenwalk standard is released"  \!D/

So Core 5.0 will be out soon?  I don't think that I can wait for summer to test it!  X!!

Edit: What I really want to know is whether there will be a beta of Core 5.0 anytime soon.

Probably not.  What  you can do, however, is download 4.8 and add a snapshot mirror to netpkg.conf.  Issue netpkg mirror and choose that snapshot mirror.  Next, netpkg upgrade.  You will now have 5.0.  ;D I did that.

Hi,

Zenwalk Core 5.0 will be hopefully out about 1 week after the release of Zenwalk 5.0 ... which should not be that far now ...

Regards.

Emmanuel
