We need MPlayer with DVD menu support. Otherwise the g-mplayer menu entry "Open DVD with menus" won't work and we hav no out of the box possibility to play DVDs with menu.

This patch has to be applied:
http://onebithq.com/root/mplayer/dvdnav
And here is the small dependency package libdvdnav:

Xine has native support to DVD menu.
Xine seems be better to play dvd (it support all subtitles) while MPlayer is better to play divx, xvid and other video codecs.

You can donlwoad Xine from Netpkg (only xine-lib and xine-gui are necessary).

By the way, I think that Xine should be the default player.

That's the problem. We have MPlayer as default player, so we need DVD menu support in MPlayer.
I think Xine was the default player in older versions and I don't know the reason why we have switched to MPlayer. I have both players because Xine is my default "single click on a file" player and xine-lib is needed by Amarok and some other software, but MPlayer plays more videos for me and is neede by VDR and some other software  ;)

Xine _used_ to be my player of choice, but since Zen3.0 doing anything with it crashes it. Heck, I even believe that if I look at it, it might hang...!

can someone be so gentle to tell me what exactly i must do to use the patch you talk about?

i had downloaded dvdnav-patch-to-MPlayer-dev-SVN-r25787-4.1.3.patch and the last source of mplayer...
i had extracted the source in my directory; in this directory i had typed the command "patch -p0 -i patch-name" as wrote at the page http://onebithq.com/root/mplayer/dvdnav, but the shell had shown several errors...

probably i'd done something wrong, but what?

Nothing. It's already applied in the mplayer package! ;)

you mean that the package in zen5.0 is already patched or that there is a patched pkg somewhere else?
in the second case, where is that repository?

now i have these versions (and they doesn't work):
gnome-mplayer-0.5.3-i486-50.1
mplayer-1.0rc2-i486-50.4
