I'm experiencing a problem where my screen goes totally black after installing the unofficial driver from http://www.rapidrabbit.de/jj/zenwalk/pa ... deo-intel/.

The period before the crash varies from a few seconds to an hour. I did not have this problem before installing the driver (and my old solution that I used in my last install was downloading the official packages from the slackware-mirror).

Now, how do I uninstall this unofficial package and replace it with the packages needed from the slackware-mirror?

(Excuse the brief explanations, I don't know when this thing chooses to die on me again :P)

Hi,

First:
removepkg xf86-video-intel-2.1.0-i486-50.1.tgz

Second
Well...herein lyes your problem. You can get version 2.0.0 from http://carroll.cac.psu.edu/pub/linux/di ... i486-1.tgz since it is built on xorg version 7.2.

The newest driver, version 2.2.0, found here http://carroll.cac.psu.edu/pub/linux/di ... i486-1.tgz may have been built on xorg 7.3.

I'm not sure if this will cause a problem for you but it is possible.

???

On a side note, Zenwalk does currently have the latest Intel driver running smoothly on it's xorg-7.3 version currently found in snapshot. The problem for you is that I have no idea what version of Zenwalk you have installed nor if can plan to upgrade to a snapshot system. The version of xorg-7.3 in snapshot is a MAJOR change from xorg-7.2 but goes smoothly for everyone so far.

Just something to think about.

Michael

I'm running a clean install of 4.8 at the moment, so I can actually read this post without rebooting twice. ;)

Where can I get the latest snapshot? I'd be willing to give it a try for sure. It's not like I've got anything to lose with a 20 minute fresh clean install running. ;)

Just point netpkg to a snapshot mirror (edit an existing one and replace "current" by "snapshot" in the address) and upgrade!

Make sure you read the changelog first: http://www.zenwalk.org/modules/news/art ... storyid=65

I'm afraid none of the drivers mentioned above worked at all for me. X complained that there were no 'intel' module installed (I tried both separately and even rebooted after each install/uninstall).

I tried changing to snapshot, going 'init 3', 'netpkg upgrade', and rebooted when it had finished (without errors), only to be greeted by a kernel panic.

Any suggestions? Not even my old method of snatching the packages from the Slackware-reps works anymore - they give me the same problem as the first unofficial driver I stumbled upon - glitches in the image every other minute and finally a black (or white!) screen.

There are no problems with the hardware as it works perfectly in OS X and Xubuntu. :/

Phew, that was quite a journey. The upgrade ignored to install a fair number of packages required by Xorg, such as kbd, mouse, video drivers, xorg base-fonts etc., but now it's up and running without any glitches so far (I don't know if I mentioned it before, but with the old unofficial driver, the screen would "glitch"/shake for just about the time of a screen update every few minutes.)

Just when I was typing that, the glitch occured again, and I haven't seen it in any other distro. For the records, my machine is an Intel Mac Mini. We'll se if it will freeze again after upgrading now.

Update: 2 hours in, the same problem as before. I wonder if there is a problem with the combination of Mac Mini and Intel-drivers in the latest packages as this problem was NOT present a few months ago. :(

Update: Just installed the 5.0 beta, and the problem with the 'glitching' (the screen blanking out and reappearing every few minutes) is still here, and I suspect that the freezing is too. Been running Xubuntu for a few weeks now, with a maximum uptime of one week without a glitch. I hope this problem will be resolved before 5.0 final. :/

Is ubuntu using the latest, the same, or the older intel xorg driver?  I am interested because the one in ZW snapshot repo is not working properly on my laptop.  Remember the days when tv needs rabbit-ear antenna aligned properly to get a clear picture? The result of mine is like the tv with misaligned rabbit-ear.  I got static all over the screen  Not very happy!  :(  I am blacklisting xorg so it won't be downloaded on my stable machine.  I am running vesa driver on my snapshot while checking to see if the intel driver will work.  When it finally works, then I will consider upgrading my current machine's xorg.

How can I see what version of Xorg and the driver I'm running? I've got Xubuntu 7.10 up and running again, without any problems at all (and I don't like that xD).

Hey, those are my packages. How could I miss this thread so long.  :-[

I compiled them after 4.8 was released I think and I still use them with Zenwalk 4.8 and Xorg 7.2 on my notebook without problems. I'm not sure how they'll behave with the new Xorg though.

I'll make some comments about this on the Wiki.

In zenwalk
Code:
stillborn[~]$ X -version

X.Org X Server 1.4.0
Release Date: 5 September 2007
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0
Build Operating System: Zenwalk Linux 5.0 Zenwalk Linux Project
Current Operating System: Linux zenwalk 2.6.23.12 #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Dec 19 14:34:44 CET 2007 i686
Build Date: 10 December 2007  07:44:41AM

        Before reporting problems, check http://www.zenwalk.org
to make sure that you have the latest version.
Module Loader present

and for the driver I thought it was this but I get this
Code:
stillborn[~]$ xdriinfo
libGL is too old.

anyone know is this right?

Unless the information in the packages.ubuntu.com is wrong, they are providing xorg-7.3.0 and xorg-video-intel-2.2.0 and that is exactly the same as the one in zenwalk.  I guess mine could be related to my mb's chipset.  No worries!  I am using the old i810-1.7.4 and that fixed my problem.  I just compiled it on xorg-7.3.  I just have to blacklist xorg-drivers-video package now.  ;D

I'm trying out the new 5.0 RC1 right now. I'll be back with an update. If it isn't fixed by now, it probably won't make it into the Final. :(

(No glitches or freezing so far at least)

Update: "02:25:06 up  1:05" without any graphical glitches indicating the prescense of the bug so far. This is looking good, but I've been optimistic before. I'll give it the night, and if it hasn't crashed tomorrow it seems like it has been fixed. :)

Update: "11:45:33 up 10:26" without any problems. Seems like there is reason for me to celebrate.  \!D/

Update: False alarm. The problem is still here, though much less noticeable. Tried again with Leopard and Xubuntu/Ubuntu to make sure that there is no problem with the hardware, and both worked great. :/
