Hi guys and girls,

I just want to say thank you very much for the development of this distro. I fumble around with it since minislack and I enjoy seeing the active development of zenwalk.

cheers,

Yes i read it. I mean to say that it still say about a line on snapshot. So i think u guys can remove it off from there coz Zen stable is out :D

And i just upgrded to new one. Its working fine. But i just like to comment on ibiblio mirror, that it still shows the old packages only (48 or 46). I tried to upgrade using that mirror but all packages was getting reinstalling which shows the same versions as i already had on system. So i then shifted to mericual.eu mirror and got the new bunches of packages. So i think u guys forgot to update ibiblio mirror? ;)

And i some where read that Zen 5 wont uses Udev any more right? But when i isntalled Hal, it asked me to isntall and dependency module called Udev package. So what is this lil secret? ;)

Oh btw, i would like to ask one more question about updating my existing 2.6.22.9 kernel to new one on Zen 5.0, Is that update or upgrade really needed for kernel too? What else feature i would get if i upgrade to new one, apart from Wifi stuffs which i dont have? Will it be more faster than before (4.8 ) ??

I think it's absolutely clear as it is, but OK. :)

Some mirrors sync once every hour, some sync once every day. That doesn't really depend on anyone in Zenwalk. It only has to do with the server's admin and how often they have their servers synced with the main zenwalk repositories.

No, it still uses udev. Hal just replaced the udevtools for mounting devices. Hal itself uses udev to communicate with devices.

Other than some bugfixes, not much i think. Be warned that at some point some packages might require a newer kernel to run anyway, don't really know if we have such a package in the repos though.

umm...So that means Udevtols and Hal are some what same and works same right? But why that transition req? Plus whats difference b/w udevtools and udev? and since HAL took over udevtools, whats the advantage?

Yes, they accomplish the same things more or less. Hal had been very buggy in the past and udevtools was developed in Zenwalk as a better solution. But lately hal has become very stable and the decision was made to dump udevtools in favour of hal. Some devices that were never supported by udevtools now work without problems, like memory card readers.

Hey guys,

Did a full upgrade from 4.8 to 5.0 using the Wiki article. So in this order:
- xorg-stuff
- hal
- kernel + headers + ndiswrapper
- reboot
- Nvidia (latest from their site)

Everything seems to work super! I noticed that in netpkg.conf the blacklist line now only contains aaa_base. Why are kernel, headers and ndiswrapper no more blacklisted? I have blacklisted them manually now, but I was wondering why this wasn't done. btw: don't worry, I won't upgrade aaa_base :-)

I was having a second question: Is it better to reinstall completely from a new ISO? A full reinstall would remove left-over garbage, but would it be worth the trouble? I did a full install with 4.4.1, upgrading since then. The extra packages I would have to install take quite some time too, so I just upgraded this time. I only hesitated because 5.0 is a major release. Anyone any thoughts about this and the blacklist thing?

Good job to the team!

Kind regards, Ron

Well, it depends. If your system is not that much different from a standard Zenwalk installation, perhaps the best choice is to install from scratch. But if you have changed your system considerably from the standard installation the best choice is upgrading. No left-over garbage should be there.

The blacklist thing changed probably because users would never un-blacklist the kernel and related packages so they always used an old kernel which could get them in some trouble.

easy question, i think! i'm still dual booting between xp pro and zenwalk.

if i download the new 5.0, the new installation will simply ask to overwrite the current linux partitions, or, at least will give that option correct? i'd much rather do a clean install than an upgrade via the way wiki says.

dang! both usa download links says unable to connect. :(

this version could be the deciding factor on which linux distro i keep as my os of choice. been debating between zenwalk and blag, which has a new version coming soon!

this depends on how you set up your partitions. in my case, i have my /home directory as a separate partition. so when i update by iso, i reformat and overwrite the / partition while keeping the /home partition unformatted. this will install zenwalk cleanly while keeping all your documents.

but upgrading from 4.8 to 5.0 by the way described in the wiki is pretty easy...
