I Installed Zenwalk 6.4 on an old desktop with an on-motherboard Ethernet RJ45 network connection - It did not connect. I have reinstalled 5.2 Gnome and it worked straight away (some other more recent versions similarly would not connect to the Internet). Computer is a former Education Dept cast off ACER that did run XP pro so must have been a reasonable quality. Any Suggestions? (It may be just filling in the correct addresses in the black magic area or other but it is somewhat discouraging).

Well my desktop is sitting next to my router (Netcomm N3G002W) and a wired RJ45 connection is the preferred connection. I have a Netgear WG111 USB wireless adapter, however trying it out it could not find the requested drivers (reinstalling Zenwalk with the USB adapter in place). (I had not been able to work out how to get it working under Zenwalk with previous versions).

While your plug is a RJ45, the actual component on your computer it plugs into is far more relevant. Seeing you seem to be connecting on other distros and not Zenwalk, I would guess a kernel module is not loaded or another one needs to be blacklisted. That's the best I can do with out seeing the output of lspci and lsmod

So please open a terminal and login as root and issue those commands and then post the output.

Hi,

so you want to hook (use a real physical wire!) up your pc to your router. Did you start the program wicd (Menu -> Network Manager) ?

to check if your wire network device is working try "grepping the dmesg for a ethernet device" / type the following in a Terminal
Code:
[~]$ dmesg | grep eth <--- type this
eth0: Broadcom 44xx/47xx 10/100BaseT Ethernet 00:21:70:c6:32:d8   <--- my system found a broacom device under eth0

cheers, chik3n

wicd manage also the RJ45 connection.
What type of LAN do you have on this computer ? (lspci)

I MAY have the same problem

everything worked perfectly well on ZW 6.2, 6.0 ... but today:

Fresh and clean 6.4 installation, no errors, wicd works but there is no wired (I don't have wireless) connection. I checked and kernel module (e1000e) for my intel PRO (Intel 82566DM PCIe Gigabit LAN controller to be correct) is there, ifconfig shows eth0 (with no ip and other stuff) and dhcpc (or whatever it is) is able to get the right ip from my router. Still the ip is not assigned to eth0 (ifconfig output is the same as before and there is no connection).

Wicd does not help, no matter what settings are used. It shows "getting IP address" then "connecting done" and finally "no connection".

Any idea?

This reminds me that we had kernelfirmware package on 6.2 for e100/e1000. Do we need it now too, anyone?
(i can't check, at work now and using phone).

If you did look in wicd/preferences/g.settings that the network interfaces has been correctly detected and in external programms have you try whit DHCP in automatic and
in wired network/properties you have to try to check dhcp hostname.
If you did all this trying to refresh the connection everytime and still not work
disconnect all and uncheck any automatic connection in wicd. Run netconfig as root. See if it works.

@ franco
Thanks for the tips but none of them works. netconfig says that basic network was set up but this does not mean I actually have an internet connection. I am starting to believe it is kernel issue. Downloaded the source and latest intel e1000e driver and will try to compile one myself.

PS
I noticed that I can not mount my windows partition - "can not mount ntfs filesystem". This release is getting more and more strange to me.

Did you have a look in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf if the module is not present in ?
If it is the case, try to comment the line in the file.

what is the result lsmod | grep ee ?

# Alternate Intel EtherExpress Pro/100 support driver. List it
# here so it won't conflict with an already-loaded eepro100 module.
blacklist e100
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

The blacklist is not an issue. I commenting/uncommenting there change nothing. My card is detected and working it just does not get IP from dhcpcd.
Below I add result of lsmod. As you can see there is e1000e. I can add e1000 and e100 and nothing happens. Dhcpcd gets the right IP address from my router and then is "forking to background". eth0 still does not get this IP. It looks like something happens in between.

By the way - windows get the ip normally, and ZW 6.2 worked flawlessly, so this must be strictly ZW 6.4 issue.

Unfortunately I am not familiar with scripts and can not track the issue (I even don't know where to start).
