Zenwalk 6.0 RC1 is available

Post by hyperion » Sat Feb 28, 2009 7:30 pm

Hi,

Considering the size of the changelog : we decided that the version should jump to 6.0.

Please test this ISO , and report any bug :)

Here's a list of the most important changes :

- Kernel 2.6.28.7 with gspca (supports many USB webcams)
- XFCE 4.6
- Faster boot (tunned init scripts, with realtime I/O scheduler)
- PAM authentication has been added to the system
- Wicd is becoming the main network configuration tool
- Openoffice 3.0.1 replaces Gnome Office
- Improved suspend/hibernate, with XFCE Power Manager
- new Netpkg with orphan dependencies and "offline operation" support
- New Zenpanel with integrated Disk Manager, Wifi and Wired Network Manager
- Gksu keyring based desktop granting system
- New artwork
- Many new applications

Have fun
JP

Finally! I was surprised to be excited by the release. It comes just in time after so much waiting.
I am sure that more people will, again, discover this distribution and use it as their main operating system.

By the way, I hope the installer supports ext4. Does it?

This is great. Assuming bugs are reported quickly, how soon can we expect a stable release? (We did skip alpha and beta, did we not?)

Looks good for Zenwalk's future though...

To get the md5 sum, just append .md5 to the links in the first post.

Wicd is becoming the main network configuration tool
Should be written as:
Wicd is now the only supported network configuration tool.

A 'cautionary note' should be added also:
Wicd-Installer does not follow well-known-standards for installing a service.
Any other means of configuring your network will only work as long as Wicd is not reinstalled or updated.

My Linus Torvald, why on Earth did you guys choose to switch to OpenOffice? Will it really run seamlessly on Pentium III or so? And second, I really can't get the way you managed to keep ZW small enough for a CD =)

YYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!

This 6.0 RC1 version is looking good! I don't agree too much with OpenOffice but I don't
know how Hyperion managed to keep it under 700MB((honestly, no matter what, we should keep this distro under 700MB)). Anyway, Gksu feature is great and this version is supposed to run even faster! I can't wait...

This is the greatest distro ever....hands down. \!D/

First install today went well. Noticed a change in the fonts used for the ncurses stuff. Not bad, but just seemed larger. No hiccups on the install. Fast as usual, everything worked. I too was surprised at the size of the ISO this time, attributing that to the included OpenOffice suite. As others have noted, I'm not sure that's a good idea either. Although the included Gnome office suite wasn't entirely without it's problems, it is sufficient for many user's needs looking for something lightweight. Thing is, there's not much to choose from in office suites that isn't large! If possibly just a word processor & spreadsheet program were available, I think even that would work to make the ISO complete.

Overall, I give this release a thumbs up on the way to a final release! I think with XFCE4 4.6 release, plus all the other additions & updates will make Zenwalk 6.0 a noteworthy release!

Bandipat....thanks for your review.

If they decided to include OO that is fine...i would just get rid of it and would install Abiworkd back. Not a big deal. But I really think that we should keep the distro under 700MB no matter what.

I can't wait to try it!!!!

nice move :) love zenwalk \!D/

I don't really think openoffice is a bad idea after all. Abiword usually had problems with doc files, and there was no way to see a ppt. The only bad thing, is that it's quite heavy and I don't really know how well will an older computer handle it.

Good work :) best distro ever

Alright!!

Have a couple computers just setting here waiting for the final!!

As mentioned several times, size matters!! Keep it small (under 700MB's)

Excellent Work Guys!!!
Best Distro I've ever seen. Install size was just about 2Gb. Open office did surprise me, but as has been said, people with older computers can just uninstall it and go for abiword.

OK, dl'd and installed on my old desktop, a Dell Dimension PIII with 256M RDRAM. No problems at all. It is fast and slick as always. After switching to IceWM (my preference) it's almost blazing. ;D With Iceweasel and htop open, CPU usage shows around 13-17%, no swap in use.

I have run OO before on this machine and other PIII's and have never had any real problems. It is a little slower to open, but not so much as to make it unpleasant. Totem is an interesting choice, as well. I have used it before as part of the Zenwalk Gnome edition, and liked it fine. So far I have found nothing negative.

The only additional packages I installed (other than IceWM, feh, and the restricted codecs) was Comix. This has by far the closest match to what I use daily than any other distro, including older versions of ZW. Love it!

Will try it on an old laptop next, it could be more of a test since it has a Celeron with only 128M ram. If it runs well on that, you've really got a winner.

Would be kool if Kernel mode setting and ext4 support do come with 4.6

And i guess, Gmplayer got replaced by Totem, very bad :(
