Hi,

it's finally here!
I'm really excited and proud that my CAM packages are finally officially in a stable Zenwalk release, and I hope they will be useful and as fast as the rest of the system. :)

It took a long time, but it is a great release! Thanks to the Zenwalk team.

How about the Core version? What's the ETA on this? Or at least, if one of the devs could give me a list of packages to remove from the full installation, that would be great. I want to experiment building my installation to mostly using directfb. :-D

Is there anyway to activate the Screensaver the old way: CTRL-ALT-DEL ? It is not working for me.

I'm using the upgrade instructions from the Wiki for 5.2 to 6.0 and in the settings for XFCE 4.6 it gives this command:

Code: Select all

rm -rf  /home/your_user/.config/xfce4*
cp -a  /etc/skel/.config/xfce4* /home/your_user/.config/
chown -R your_user:users /home/your_user/.config

The -a after cp is showing as an invalid option. What's the correct one, please?

I tried that one and it did not work for me. I got stuck in one particular lib file but I can't remember which one. I did a clean install in order to avoid problems. I don't think you can upgrade from 5.4 to 6.0....if you suceed, pls let us know.

Sorry, it was a mistake on my technique in entering the commands. All seems well again. The upgrade from
netpkg via the wiki instructions went flawlessly but took about one hour on this old 1 g AMD. This was a 5.2 to 6.0, so far so good. ;D

Good to hear...I am glad it worked for you.

What do you think so far? Do you think Zenwalk is running a lot faster this time?

I could tell the big difference at least on my laptop. A magnificent improvement of performance.

Zenwalk 6.0 OK, but that damn LiLo! and WINE on Zen's XFCE!

Post by capricornus » Sun Mar 08, 2009 9:07 am

190 pages on the forum about LiLo. Has never worked well. On my test pc, all the Linux distro's are ignored. So I reinstalled Mepis8 which is a dream to do, and which grub works perfect.
And after installing WINE on XFCE, nothing shows up in the menu, even not after re-logging in. XUbuntu does fine, WOLVIX Hunter does fine, why Zen Not?

But everything else works well out of the box, well done!

Installed on Lenovo T61.
The installation went flawlessly.
Everything works including wired and wireless network.

In comparison to Windows XP installation:

XP took 5 hours. Zenwalk took 20 minutes.
For xp I had to change bios settings, search the Internet for hideous drivers and struggle with the low quality Thinkvantage software. Most of the hardware wasn't supported out of the box (as expected actually because XP is 7 years old).
After those hours I had to spend more time choosing and finding programs for office, burning, programming, media etc...
For Zenwalk I had to do nothing. 20 minutes of painless installation and the system is production ready.

You did a great job.

And I really think that the improvement in appearance is highly important. It gives the uses a good impression in first look. Nice icon theme!

Thank you.

What has to be done in order for the netbooks world to be able to install Zenwalk?
Do we need a usb image?

Normally, ISO installable CD could be "burned" on USB key with Unetbootin (search in google, it's easy).
But here, the initrd is too big (at least for my bios) to boot, even when booting directly from the CD.
I search in the initrd and find that it's the kernel modules which takes a very huge size.
The biggest size is taken with modules for "net", "media/video" and "media/dvb". I personaly think that these modules are useless for a install CD in text mode and which doesn't use the network. I will try to remove them from the initrd, remake an ISO and see If I could install...

initrd size should not be a problem : most initrd are over 30MB today for gtk installers

Zenwalk 6.0 is the first Linux system to provide a multi-partition lilo bootloader. You can configure several entries for different systems, on different partitions, and just run "liloz".

This has been extensively tested , and works ! if it doesn't work : then you probably made some errors in the config file.

Grub2 was not mature enough for Zenwalk 6.0, but we are considering it for Zenwalk 6.2.

Anyway, against the liloz system, grub2 has very few advantages (mostly the CLI).
