Zenwalk Gnome 6.0 is out!

We are proud to announce the release of Zenwalk 6.0 Gnome Edition! As always, Zenwalk features the latest Linux technology, featuring Linux kernel 2.6.28.7 and the Gnome 2.26.0 Desktop Environment.

The Gnome 2.26.0 desktop includes a number of new features; a tabbed interface in nautilus, DVD-video creation capabilities in Brasero, Totem comes with youtube, jamendo and BBC plugins enabled by default, better support for multiple monitors and much more.

One of the main changes over previous Zenwalk releases, is the inclusion of a lightweight and optimized version of OpenOffice.org 3.0.1, replacing abiword and gnumeric. Included OpenOffice.org modules are Writer, Calc, Impress and Draw, while Math, Database and Java support are provided as a downloadable addon with the openoffice-extra package.

Other significant changes in this release are:

- Faster boot (tuned init scripts, with realtime I/O scheduler)
- New Zenpanel with integrated Disk Manager, Wifi and Wired Network Manager
- Gksu keyring based desktop granting system
- PAM authentication has been added to the system
- New Netpkg with orphan dependencies and "offline operation" support
- The powerful Exaile music jukebox has been added
- Gthumb has replaced gqview and gtkam for viewing images and importing them from your camera
- The lighting PIM extension for icedove is installed by default
- New artwork
- A simplified installer

As usual, Zenwalk Gnome 6.0 comes with a complete programming environment and libraries to provide an ideal platform for application programmers, all included in a "single CD" iso.

We hope you will enjoy using this release! Have fun,

gapan

How to install in Virtualbox

If anyone wants to install this in Virtualbox, you'll have to do some extra steps, as Virtualbox doesn't like our xorg:

1. Start the installation normally and wait for all packages and LILO to be installed. Reboot when prompted.
2. At the LILO prompt, press the TAB key and enter "Zenwalk 1" (no quotes)
3. Login as root (no password set yet)
4. From the Virtualbox menu, click on "Install guest additions"
5. mkdir /vb; mount /dev/sr0 /vb
6. cd /vb; ./VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86.run
7. reboot
8. Don't unmount the guest additions CD yet!
9. Complete installation normally

gapan,
Does this release have all the new files now in snapshot, gcc, xorg 7.4, etc or is it basically the same 6.0 release with Gnome replacing XFCE4? I wasn't sure if you used the latest stuff or you stick with the same to keep continuity with that release. Did you also use the real Openoffice.org program or did you continue using the GoOpenoffice that was used on the 6.0 release ISO? I ask, because you mention Openoffice.org in your release notes and the two are different programs.

Congrats on the release and new Gnome files! \!D/

I assume this works for you
For me, it still crashes the vm right after user config. I think it has something to do with videconfig. If I comment out the videoconfig lines in rc.postinstall and install a working xorg.conf file I can get by it and get into x, but it's a struggle. Had the same problem with ZW 6.0.
Nice that you did fixed the kernelheaders with the missing link. ;)

Hmmm... Maybe you're right. The first time it rebooted it crashed on videoconfig.I thought it probably did so, because I had unmounted the vbox guest additions in the mean time. I mounted them again and it worked on next boot. But maybe it wasn't that after all.

gapan,

I never did get to try the NetworkManager package you so kindly provided for 5.4 (or possibly 5.6 beta), due to a series of computer mishaps (including being unable to burn either the GNOME or standard ISO). However I have a super-snaz new CD now (thanks to Sigg3.net) and I was wondering if the applet is packaged (or even usable) for 6.0 before I devote what will doubtless be an entire day to installation and configuration (replacing Linux Mint, which does have the applet and is therefore usable online, at last! \!D/ ). Usually such a thing would not be a problem but I am a student mere months away from my Leaving Cert and I need to plan this stuff carefully now. ;D

Thanks.

No it isn't included. I still don't understand why you really need it...

Ah, well, that'd be the O2 Broadband (HUAWEI E220). Sigh. It's all that will work out in this damn countryside!

Oh, Linus Torvald. I love Ireland, but really.

Thanks anyway, gapan.

The package that I built for you should probably work, and you could also learn how to use the ppp suite for that, or something like wvdial (sorry, don't know much about ppp).

If the NetworkManager package doesn't work, I can rebuild it in any case.
