Zenwalk 6.0 has been released !

Post by hyperion » Sat Mar 07, 2009 1:02 pm

Zenwalk 6.0 has been released !

We are proud to announce the 6th major version of Zenwalk GNU/Linux. This release comes with the biggest changelog in the history of the project to offer many new features and optimizations.

As usual, our challenge was to provide latest versions of the most modern applications as well as kernel, while keeping the usual level of simplicity and performance that make Zenwalk special in the GNU/Linux world.

We spent the 2 last month polishing the desktop around the new XFCE 4.6, making sure that this brand new version is well integrated into Zenwalk 6.0.

We also replaced Gnome Office with our lightweight and optimized version of Openoffice 3.0.1, splited in 2 packages : the base package provides Writer, Calc, Impress and Draw ; the “extra” package (available via Netpkg) provides Math, Darabase and Java support.

The Totem movie player is also part of the adventure, replacing Mplayer, which is still available from our growing package repository.

Here's a summary of the most important changes :

- Kernel 2.6.28.7 with gspca (supports many USB webcams)
- The new XFCE 4.6
- Openoffice 3.0.1 replaces Gnome Office as the main productivity suite
- Wicd becomes the main network configuration tool
- New Zenpanel with integrated Disk Manager, Wifi and Wired Network Manager
- Gksu keyring based desktop granting system
- Faster boot (tuned init scripts, with realtime I/O scheduler)
- PAM authentication has been added to the system
- Improved suspend/hibernate, with XFCE Power Manager
- new Netpkg with orphan dependencies and "offline operation" support
- The powerful Exaile juke-box stream player has been added
- New artwork
- A simplified installer

We hope that you will enjoy being able to perform nearly any office or multimedia operation right out of the box with this “single ISO” operating system, installed in 20 minutes on any modern computer.

Have fun !
JP

What is the way to update from 6.0 RC1 or 5.4 beta 1 to 6.0 release?
Should I switch to /current repo or stay on /snapshot to upgrade to Zenwalk 6?

Thanks for the distro and your efforts!

Please search the wiki. The upgrade instructions in there which are usually released should still be in there.

Thanks guys. I thought the 6.0rc1 was great. Going to put the 6.0 and another box that is just waiting for the download to finish.

You guys do fantastic work!!

What's changed since the RC? I noticed that the file size took a nosedive from 679MB to 628MB, all in the short time from RC to final. Better compression? Slightly modified application set?

I'm not too happy about the inclusion of OpenOffice.org instead of Abiword/Gnumeric, but I guess if it's just one installed "package", it's an easy remove (though at the same time, less choice in what *parts* of it to remove). OpenOffice is in the league of Firefox on this machine: as soon as you run it, get ready for lots of swapping. Too bad, if RDRAM wasn't so damn expensive and hard to find, and I'd upgrade it from 256MB... but even then, I still wouldn't be happy with OOo's bloat (whether there's enough memory or not). No real excuse for such bloated software.

Awesome!
Downloading!

So glad you dumped Abiword and Gnumeric for OOO3, and split it up. I really hate all the bloat it installs by default, all I need is Writer. Also, I'm glad you chose Totem, I've used it long ago, in my Xubuntu days, I miss it.

Can't wait....

Great! Really good work. :)
So far everything works fine. I'm also planning to test the new probe script. I'm really eager for that.

Thanks JP and the rest of the Zen team! I've been away from Zenwalk for a while running Slackware. I'm looking forward to trying out Zen 6. I notice that the size of the iso has grown a bit since the Zen 4.x and 5.x releases.
