The live version will take Zenwalk to even more new people who want to test it.
And the ability to run Zenwalk from usb is great!
They already know...

The new one should be or the old one should be 8a4c7e9d83877092f2aa5e19ea6f5f63 zenwalk-live-6.0.iso?

Anyway, the one that I downloaded still works/boots to a fairly quick desktop. My only complaint is certain kernel modules are missing. For me specifically pci_hotplug and pciehp. Both are need for the SD/MMC card readers in the Acer Aspire One A150 netbooks that are so popular. Xkernelconf list them available, but you can't add them. Catfish can't find either. And modprobe returns WARNING and FATAL.

BTW, Zenwalk 6.0 standard includes them and they work quite well.

Is Zenwalk live similar to Slax? That is can it easily be run USB and can settings be saved in between uses? Also, can I install extra packages and have them available in next session?
Finally, would it be easy to make a script to sync settings from your main Zenwalk to your Zenlive?
Again, thanks for this release.

Use liveclone or persistence

rasmus wrote:Finally, would it be easy to make a script to sync settings from your main Zenwalk to your Zenlive?

Code: Select all

cp -ar /etc /mylife/
cp -ar /home /mylife/

Assuming you have mounted the root fs tree of ISO to modify to /mylife/ previously.
Another (easier) approach would be to boot with ZenLive and to use it like this:

Code: Select all

cp -ar /mnt/sda1/etc /
cp -ar /mnt/sda1/home /

(Adapt sda1 to the partition where the root to save resides.)
Then run liveclone and your settings should be on your LiveCD.

I didn't test this though. But I think it's basically the right approach.

The download is very slow. Maybe a torrent will be faster?

When I start from the main page www.zenwalk.org
and click on Live Edition and then Download.
I still get zenwalk-live-5.2.iso

zenlive.linuxish.net was pretty fast here. Faster than torrents usually are here.

Is there an option to skip graphical login (init 3) ? My notebook just stops spinning CD after "Configuring X server", both in normal and safe graphics mode D!!

Select your language, then in the menu where you can choose what to boot let the default entry selected press TAB and in the appearing prompt append " 3" at the end. Then press ENTER to boot. This should put you to runlevel 3. Like that you can also boot to any other runlevel, e.g. 1.

Does Release 6 still support from cheatcode?
I have tried but id does not work...
Here is my working grub lines for Zenlive 5.2:

Code: Select all

title Zenwalk 5.2
root (hd0,1)
kernel /linux/zenlive/vmlinuz from=/dev/sda2/linux/zenlive/zlive52.iso max_loop=255 init=linuxrc load_ramdisk=1 prompt_ramdisk=0 ramdisk_size=6666 root=/dev/ram0 rw vga=791 splash=silent keyb=it lang=it_IT.utf8 autologin
initrd /linux/zenlive/initrd.gz

And here is my not working grub lines for Zenlive 6.0:

Code: Select all

title Zenwalk 6 sda2
root (hd0,1)
kernel /linux/zenlive/6/vmlinuz from=/dev/sda2/linux/zenlive/zlive6.iso max_loop=255 init=linuxrc load_ramdisk=1 prompt_ramdisk=0 ramdisk_size=6666 root=/dev/ram0 rw vga=791 splash=silent keyb=it lang=it_IT.utf8 autologin
initrd /linux/zenlive/6/initrd.gz

During the boot, I read:

Code: Select all

looking for zenlive data directory
(searching for livecd.sgn file)
wait a while
Fatal error occured - zenlive data not found

What a stupid I am! I called the iso file as zenlive6.iso and not zlive6.iso. My mistake. D!!

Another question: is there a boot cheatcode or any other way to skip (answering yes or no automatically) the window about the choice of proprietary drivers during the boot?

Thanks.

There is a really tiny bug when booting with the proprietary modules/flash if using a savechange env. : mkdir failed when creating /home/one/Licences. mkdir should use the option "-p" to prevent this message.

I have install it on my usb key (not with LiveClone, but with xarchiver). I have a special key I made to boot multiple OS on it (currently ZL 6.0 and PartedMagic). I have loading the key with VirtualBox by using a virtual disk mapped directly to my USB key (so prevent from rebooting to test).

For now, I cannot install the VirtualBox guest additions because of multiple errors when trying to compile the module against the kernel. Is it a bug about symlinks missing or anything else ? I could provide the log file if desired.

Everything else is ok for now.

Iceweasel of Zenwalk is not the same as Iceweasel of Debian.
What I could remember, the only difference is the main web page.
Btw, I use Zenwalk for many years and do not have any problem with any site.
Could you provide an exemple ?

Btw, the post about Iceweasel is not at all at the good place, this post is about Zenwalk Live, not about Iceweasel/Firefox.
