Zenwalk Openbox 6.4 is here!

The development crew is happy to bring you the first release of Zenwalk openbox 6.4. A special edition built on Zenwalk 6.4 with highly configurable Openbox as stand-alone window manager.

Targeted mainly for intermediate users, it will give you a good starting point
to build up your own customized desktop or use it as it's delivered. On top of that you will find all the Zenwalk specific tools, same software base as in standard version and the latest Linux technology available. If you like living on the edge then join the drive and help us make Zenwalk even more better.

You will find xfce, gnome, lxde and other applications ready for your Netpkg query in our repositories.

Note : this ISO includes packages updated as of 23:25 PM CET on 2010-06-22.

Tweak it til you geek it. Have fun!

Stillborn

Hey, man, that's a brilliant idea/addition to the Zenwalk line! Stand-alone Openbox rocks, without the bloat and resources used by a full-blown DE!

Great job! I'm sure this will apeal to many Zenwalk users out there!

Regards, Martin.

Wonderful news! \!D/
I couldn't test it, but I am sure it's a great piece of work \D/
If I have time in the future I will try to help in preparing and/or selecting stuff, as I am an openbox user.

Cheers 8)

I tried it and its quite nice. Personally I think it contains lot of needles stuff like the standard edition but I keen on the design.
Btw I would rate it 4/5 ;)
Linux is friendly. :)

:) , it's based on standard(that is why the apps are mostly same, designed ;) ), althought built from snapshot, but this is just a first effort to see what zenwalk with openbox could be. But when skywatcher starts to work with me ;) , let's see what we end up with ;D, zenwalking right behind ZW standard and gnome :)

Hi stillborn.

Great news ... and it came as a big surprise. I think OpenBox is one of the very light window managers ... it is probably fast - cool.

Best regards,
Claus

There are some window managers that are even lighter, but might as well choose the best one i.e. Openbox(middle-weight), which still opens almost instantly.

I don't know if this Zenwalk release includes extra fluff like panels and trays etc., but by default then Openbox, just is an empty desktop with a black background, with a right-click menu for opening apps and a middle-click menu for changing between minimized apps, or workspaces. Everything can then be fully customized through a couple of XML files, so as to define hotkeys for opening your apps or/and changing the right-click menu and such.

I don't need panels and such(waste of screen-estate IMHO), and just define hotkeys for all my apps and alt-tab between opened/minimized windows, and my commit is 37 megs(although on Arch, not Zenwalk.)

Sorry for somewhat off-topic, but just wanted to again state how much Openbox rocks! So come-on you guys and try this release out! - You know you want it! ;) Happy Openbox-Zenwalking folks!

Anyway, i'm off now, so take care all, and thanks for everything! You guys and this forum rocks!

Best regards,

Martin.

Considering that the packages are updated to 6-22, should we be using snapshot for any updates or packages? ???

If you want to stay in current, then current, if snapshot then snapshot.

Recently switched from the Zenwalk Standard 6.4 to Zenwalk-Openbox 6.4, both run great on my old Compaq P3 800mhz, 256m ram Evo N400c laptop. Quick question about using feh to change the background wallpaper. Which autostart.sh do I edit with fehbg & to make the change stick, the .config/openbox or the /etc/xdg/openbox autostart.sh.

Thankx, and keep up the fine work!

you edit ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh file, comment out these lines

Code: Select all

# Put the background image using ImageMagick
RES=$(xdpyinfo | grep 'dimensions' | sed "s/\(.*\) \(.*\) \(.*\) \(.*\) \(.*\)/\2/")
display -dispose Background -window root -resize $RES\! /usr/share/wallpapers/lookatzen.jpg

and put

Code: Select all

 sh ~/.fehbg &
instead.
