Zenwalk 7.0 RC3 is ready

Post by hyperion » Fri Mar 04, 2011 5:08 pm

Hi,

Since RC2 we have fixed all reported bugs and the OS seems to be stable, so here we go for RC3, hopefully the last 7.0 release candidate. The kernel was downgraded to 2.6.35.11 (a long term supported special branch) as we encountered several regressions with 2.6.37. Zenwalk 7.0 will come with XFCE 4.8.1 (stable version, many bugs have been fixed since 4.8.0), and we are pleased to announce that OpenOffice will be replaced by LibreOffice which appeared to be more reliable on Zenwalk during our testing process (stability is very important for an office software).

We also changed a little bit the way we manage packages, you may have noticed that we no longer provide a "current" repository. We had to find a solution to make package management safe and clear for the average user : from now, for each version of Zenwalk, we will provide a versionalized repository including extra packages, where all packages are "certified compatible" with the given version (ie : 6.4, 7.0, ...). The "snapshot" repository will keep being an "experimental" work-in-progress repository, as usual.

7.0 RC3 versions overview :
- LibreOffice 3.3.1
- XFCE 4.8.1
- Icecat 3.6.13
- Icedove 3.0.4
- Kernel 2.6.35.11 with BFS scheduler and performance tweaks

Please download Zenwalk RC3 and help us fix remaining bugs for FINAL :

More mirrors to come soon :)

Hi,

Trying Zenwalk-7.0 RC3.

1. xf86-video-2.14.0 has this problem: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=30179. I have lost xf86-video-2.13.0. Where is it available? I need it badly.

2. LibreOffice does not start since it needs jre. This should be included in the iso image.

Even if you launch Writer separately? I thought it was only the base launcher that needed JRE.

As far as I know, it doesn't need the jre

Even when I started Writer separatey, it did not start complaining absence of jre. But when I tried restarting it, after 3 retries it started.

I installed jre and then started LibreOffice. It started without any problem.

I removed jre and then started LibreOffice again. This time it did not complain about absence of jre.

So, I cannot tell definitely whether jre is essential for LibreOffice or not.

If I give the boot option i915.modeset=1, I do not have this problem: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=30179.
But in case of xf86-video-intel-2.13.0, this option was not necessary.

Any way my problem is solved now.

Hi,

after removed packages from terminal (Icecat and Icedove) AND installed Firefox 4.0 beta12 and Thunderbird 3.1.9 how can I delete the menu-entries of removed programs?

Thanks!

Please be more specific. Which menu-entries?
Because in the Icecat package, there is no reason the menu files stay. Maybe you're talking about the entries JP adds to the XFCE menus.

Desktop-menu / Panel-menu > Applications > Network > Icecat and Icedove are present, but deleted.
