Zenwalk 7.4 is ready!

Post by hyperion » Thu Feb 13, 2014 5:36 pm

Dear users,

Back to 2004, Zenwalk has been the very first “modern” Linux OS to provide 1 application per task and everything needed for modern multimedia in a single CD ISO image.

Fast boot time, great hardware support, and no “nonsense colorful installer with dancing dolphins” : only usability matters !

With all these improvements : Zenwalk 7.4 is still fully compatible with Slackware packages !

Now what's new in Zenwalk 7.4 ?

The XFCE desktop environment has been updated version 4.12 GIT, providing a good overview of the upcoming 4.12 final. This intermediate version has been fully tested during 4 months and the result can already be considered very stable (a few components of the XFCE 4.10 have been kept for stability).

Several applications of previous Zenwalks have been replaced : Mplayer is now the multimedia player (instead of Totem), Lxdm is the display manager (instead of GDM), Xfburn is the CD:DVD burner (instead of Brasero), Geeqie is now the image viewer.

As usual most packages have been updated :
LibreOffice 4.1.3
Gimp 2.8.10
XFCE 4.12GIT
Thunderbird 24.3.0
Firefox 27.0
Kernel 3.10.25 with performance tweaks

Zenwalk 7.4 setup tool set has support to install the system on an UEFI PC (note that the bios has to be put in legacy mode temporary to boot the install CD).

Have fun !
JP

Hi JP,

Unfortunately, I am not able to boot the CD on my laptop. Same problem which was reported earlier:

mdadm: No arrays found in config file or automatically

But Slackware 14.1 is running fine on the same laptop. So, I am currently unable to test the release.

I have been searching for a while but unfortunately I wasn't able to find the missing module...

I still think that it could be related to an UEFI bios ...

Hi JP,

On the same laptop, Zenwalk 7.2 CD boots properly without any problem. Even Slackware 14.1 (32-bit) and Slackware-14.1 (64-bit) DVD's boot properly. I am unable to find any clues.

This is really exciting, I hope Zenwalk is back to stay. Please let me know how I can help the project (packaging, etc.), I really want to see Zenwalk make it, it's the only decent Xfce distro I've used over the years.

Thank you so much :)

Yes, we need more packagers.

Right now I'm performing some tests to build the next Zenwalk on top of Slack64. My goal is to provide a "900MB USB install 64 bits multilib ready Zenwalk".

We will need help to repackage some apps...

Cheers

It is really nice to see a new release ... since 7.2 in October 2012.

I've updated the Danish Wikipedia page about Zenwalk Linux.

The internet is mentioning the new release in many places.

I hope the next release will be 8.0 ... heh! ... 8 byte * 8 = 64 bit ;D

I've been waiting for this good news!
Now I'm downloading and will install it on my old laptop with CF card as a poorman's SSD.

I installed it yesterday though initially i had a problem in booting with the disc but a workaround was suggested as detailed here viewtopic.php?f=10&t=46957

The distro looks great. Ill explore more today.

@Jp,
Perhaps you should look at the above link of mine. It could be a bug in the install script or something.

Kudos to all people for making this release happen. \!D/

Hi guys, i want to register here my happiness with this release.

So far so good.

I only want to ask something about when i run terminal and want to open in /var/log/packages/package_xpto

Hom can i do that ? Because mousepad doesnt exist right ?

My solution was to use vim package_xpto

Another question is how can i use sane to use in my printer ? All drivers has been installed correctly. Printer works but not the scanner. Because when i open sane it doesnt found any device to use it.

Once again congratulations to all team that made it possible

Keep going the good work

Cheers,
Luis Silva

in root xterm:

chmod 0755 /etc/rc.d/rc.cups

cd /etc/rc.d/
