Zenwalk 7.9 x86_64 is ready for testing

Post by hyperion » Fri Feb 21, 2014 3:35 pm

Hi,

Since a week or so, I've been working on the next step Zenwalk : Zenwalk 8.0 64 bits. It will soon replace Zenwalk legacy 32 bits.

This 64 bits version is 100% EFI ready, and to be installed from an USB stick (or DVD).

To install it from USB , just do "dd if=zenwalk-7.9.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=1M" (where sdX is the USB stick device).

Zenwalk 7.9 is a test version, it lacks a few features but it's fully functional, and supposedly as stable as Slackware64 14.1 can be (I'm using it for production right now).

Happy testing

Nice, installation went smooth, seems to be working, haven't had time to try anything else yet but will report back when I have questions or remarks :)

Login Window from the settings manager/menu is not responding, I think gtksu doesn't like the -k option in lxdm-config.desktop cause after removing that it worked.
Previously I found gksu on the mirror and had it installed, with libgtop, but after entering the password I got:

Code: Select all

Failed to communicate with gksu-run-helper
Received:
ssword
While expecting
gksu: waiting

Try to install new shadow from slack repo and don't forget to activate new config

File-roller-3.8.4 gives an error when extracting an ISO. Version 3.9.2 works. The same goes for Zenwalk-7.4 btw.

3.9 isn't a stable release, the stable release in this serie, is the 3.10 version, this version need another gtk+3 version.

So I noticed, so I tried 3.9.2. Oh, well, ISO-extracting is not a daily business I suppose, but I thought I'd just mention it.

A question about wine, I cannot get my old Windows program to run under wine unless I make the system multilib. I followed Alienbob's excellent tutorial so that went fine, but when I read about wine it seems it should be able to run 32 bit programs on 64 bit. So am I reading wrong :( ,I just can't get my head around this. Wine says it can't find /usr/bin/wine or says: "'/home/sheila/.wine' is a 32-bit installation, it cannot support 64-bit applications."
I've now got a multilib system on my main pc, so I'm not stuck. Just wondering.

I have a server configured with 7.9, installation went mostly without a hitch, some nm problems that seemed to have disappeared after a while (the server has several network ports, so this may have been the source of confusion).

Would some kind soul elaborate on "mostly Slackware compatible"?

For example, is the ultimate goal to have Slackware64 repositories in the netpkg.conf? Because this is what I currently do: wget from Slackware .txz and then installpkg it.

I do not use xnetpkg, only netpkg. I manually added /etc/zenwalk-version to say "7.9" and then "8.0", this was no help in making netpkg find packages on any of the repositories. I did make some progress by manually tracking down through the directory structures and editing netpkg.conf by hand. At the moment it is as shown, but "netpkg netpkg" finds nothing on any of them

The early versions of Slackware64 packages were announced here:

http://download.zenwalk.org/people/michael/

These have not been touched since Oct 2013, while the location announced here (http://download.zenwalk.org/x86_64/current/zenwalk/) is being actively updated.

However, a number of packages available at the older location (e.g. pam) cannot be found at the newer one. Are both locations still valid? Can packages from the two be mixed and matched, or should only the official release location be used, and one should wait while the packages migrate?

Could somebody, please clarify the status of the 64-bit distribution?

Thanks!
